May 19 at the Shrewsbury Library, Sarah Audsley, Author

SAGE and the Shrewsbury Library are hosting, Sarah Audsley, to discuss her book, Landlock X.

From Texas Review Press- Sarah Audsley’s debut poetry collection joins a growing body of adoptee poetics. By examining the consequences of the internation transracial adoptee experience—her own—  Audsley’s collection finds more questions than solid answers. Employing a variety of poetic forms, co-opting the pastoral tradition to argue for belonging to the rural landscape—despite the inheritance of displacement and removal from a country of origin—Landlock X tries to solve for all the (adoptee’s) variables and knows it is an impossible task that the “I”, “you”, and “we” of the poems only approximate.

Tuesday, September 26 – Rotational No-till and Mulching Systems for Organic Vegetable Farms
3:30 – 6:30 PM
Evening Song Farm
Sponsored in part by SAGE
In this workshop Jan-Hendrik Cropp from the under_cover GbR in Germany will describe how to create no-till or low-till organic cropping systems using diverse living and/or dead mulches (such as cover crops and clover-grass cuttings), along with rotational conservation tillage to increase soil health. After a general introduction to the different mulching systems we want to discuss how these systems could be implemented on a Vermont- or farm-specific level. If the venue and weather allows Jan will also introduce hands-on methods for testing soil structure and aggregate stability that are useful for a day-to-day farming operation and inform us if a no-till or conservation tillage procedure is the right choice.
The principles and methods presented in the workshop are aimed at commercial-scale vegetable producers but can be applied in fruit growing or arable farming as well.
WHO: Jan-Hendrik Cropp has been working for years in vegetable production and arable farming as a farm co-manager. He has been active as a consultant and presenter for soil health since 5 years through his business called under_cover. He acquired his knowledge through his own farming practice, studied organic agricultural sciences and has done various soil health research trips throughout Europe and North America (2015). His passion and speciality are mulching systems for vegetable farms which he has pioneered together with many colleagues over the last couple of years and which he tries to underscore scientifically with various on-farm-trials.
